Ural State Technical University - UPI was founded as a Polytechnic Institute by the decree of the Council of People's Commissars on October 19, 1920 as a part of the Ural State University. Since 1925 the Ural Polytechnic Institute became an independent educational institution. On September 11, 1992 the Ural Polytechnic Institute was renamed to Ural State Technical University under the decree of the Government of the Russian Federation. Ural State Technical University was renamed as Ural State Technical University - UPI by Order of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation No. 1397 dated 12.05.2000.

The university consists of 42 departments training specialists, including 15 full-time departments, Institute of Supplementary Education and Vocational Retraining, Institute of Educational Information Technologies in Yekaterinburg and 28 regional subdivisions (institutes, branches and representative offices) in the following citiesTagil, Verkhnaya Salda, Kamensk-Uralsky, Pervouralsk, Krasnoturyinsk, Serov, Alapaevsk, Irbit, Kamyshlov, Krasnouralsk, Nevyansk, Sysert, Chusov, Asbest, Artemovsky, Bogdanovich, Verkhnyaya Pyshma, Verkhny Ufaley, Ivdel, Kirovgrad, Kushva, Nyagan, Polevsky, Revda, Sukhoy Log, Sredneuralsk, Krasnoufimsk, Novokuznetsk. There are more than 39100 students, 23100 of them study at full-time departments of 16 specialties and 119 specializations and there are 132 departments at the university. For the first time the university has licensed 8 specialties of secondary vocational education. For five years, since 1997, in accordance with the needs of the region at the university training on 43 new specialties, 1 direction of bachelor training and 4 directions of master's training has been opened. The University has highly qualified scientific and pedagogical staff of 2171 people, among whom there are more than 300 doctors of sciences, professors and 1124 candidates of sciences, associate professors. There are 9 full members of the Russian Academy of Science and 116 members of Russian public academies among the teaching staff. |
